Sister Mercy possesses a high-energy, blues-driven sound that’s been getting audiences out of their seats and onto the dance floor since 2013. With deep roots in the Oregon music scene, the band is known for soulful, sultry songs that smoothly transition to funky blues rock bolstered by the powerhouse, gospel-tinged vocals of frontwoman April Brown. Winner of the Cascade Blues Association’s “Journey to Memphis” competition in 2016 and 2018, and nominated for Best Contemporary Blues Band at the 2017 Muddy Awards, their sophomore record Diamonds dropped on July 2nd, 2018.
The band has played several high profile gigs, including The Waterfront Blues Festival (four years running), The Gorge Blues and Brews Festival and Highway 99 in Seattle, WA. SISTER MERCY plays monthly at Catfish Lou’s in Portland (2017 Muddy Award for Best Venue) and has played several shows in Memphis, TN on Beale Street, including BB King’s Blues Club…the home of the Blues.
Lead singer April Brown mesmerizes with powerful, full range vocals and glamorous stage presence rarely seen in Portland. Scott Garcia plays lead guitar with Roger Espinor (formerly of Rose City Kings) on drums, John Webb on bass and Debby Espinor on keys. Frontwoman April Brown has a strong musical theater background and studied improv at the famous Groundlings Theater in LA. She comes from a musical family and grew up singing in church gospel choirs. Her sister, Kelsey, is a former member of Sister Mercy and has written songs for the band, including “Beale Street” and “Baby I’m No Fool” on the new album, Diamonds.
"Sister Mercy's soulful, sultry songs suddenly but smoothly transition to funky blues rock in a way that keeps you on the dance floor for hours." -Michelle Bean, Owner, Catfish Lou’s
