Maryhill Winery 2016 Viognier

January 13, 2018

Appellation: Columbia Valley

Craig and Vicki Leuthold, keyed the winemaking talent of Richard Batchelor, have grown Viognier into the second-largest production wine at Maryhill. Most of the fruit comes from the Gunkel Vineyards (41%) that surround their Goldendale winery, but Tudor Hills Vineyard in the Yakima Valley (36%) isn't far behind, and the Andrews family sites in the Horse Heaven Hills — Coyote Canyon and McKinley Springs — add some minerality. The Leutholds have been receiving gold medals for Viognier for more than a decade, and they've maintained the ripe fruit characteristic using discrete amounts of French oak while dialing down the sweetness. Hallmarks include apricot, honeysuckle and orange Creamsicle as acidity nicely balances by a bit of residual sugar. In the past decade, Maryhill has received several Platinum awards from Wine Press Northwest for its work with Viognier. And the 2016 vintage earned a gold medal the Washington State Wine Competition.

Rating: Outstanding! by Great Northwest Wine. (14% alc.)

Price: $16

Production: 8,291 cases

Food pairings: The Leutholds enjoy it with creamy dishes such as Chicken Alfredo or smoked salmon fettuccine.
