REVIEW: 2011 Proprietor’s Reserve Syrah

Jan 29, 2014

Maryhill Winery 2011 Proprietor’s Reserve Syrah, Columbia Valley, $36

By Great Northwest Wine on January 29, 2014

This highly decorated Washington winery picked up gold medal at the 2014 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition with this Syrah. It is dominated by fruit from Alder Ridge, one of the state’s most wind-buffeted sites, which might explain the black pepper tones throughout. There’s a theme of black cherry, blackberry, mocha and bay leaf in the aromas and flavors. The flourish of boysenberry acidity and sturdy tannins in the finish steer this well away from the profile of a syrupy Syrah.
